How to Train Your Dragon (2025) is a live-action reimagining of DreamWorks Animation’s beloved 2010 animated classic, based on the novel by Cressida Cowell. Directed and written by Dean DeBlois — who also helmed the original trilogy — this fantasy adventure film brings the epic tale of Vikings and dragons to life in a bold new way. It stars Mason Thames as Hiccup, Nico Parker as Astrid, and Gerard Butler reprising his role as Stoick the Vast, alongside Gabriel Howell, Julian Dennison, Bronwyn James, and Nick Frost.
As the first-ever live-action production from DreamWorks Animation, the film was produced in collaboration with Marc Platt Productions and features music by returning composer John Powell. Filmed in Northern Ireland, How to Train Your Dragon premiered at CinemaCon on April 2, 2025, and was released by Universal Pictures on June 13. It received strong critical acclaim and became a major box-office success, grossing $562 million worldwide and ranking as the fifth-highest-grossing film of the year.
A sequel, inspired by the second animated installment, is already in development and set for release in June 2027.
Plot Summary:
