28 Years Later is a 2025 British post-apocalyptic horror film directed by Danny Boyle and written by Alex Garland. Serving as the long-awaited third installment in the 28 Days Later franchise, the film stars Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Alfie Williams, and Ralph Fiennes.
Set nearly three decades after the outbreak of the Rage Virus, the story follows a young boy named Spike, who embarks on a perilous journey from the quarantined sanctuary of Lindisfarne island into the infected wastelands of mainland Britain. Accompanied by his ailing mother, he uncovers a terrifying new evolution of the virus—and the mutated morality of the few remaining survivors.
Produced by Boyle alongside original series producer Andrew Macdonald, and with Cillian Murphy returning as executive producer, the film reunites the original creative team behind 28 Days Later and marks a return to the franchise’s gritty, emotionally-charged horror roots.
28 Years Later was released in the United Kingdom and United States on 20 June 2025, and has grossed over $150 million worldwide. A sequel, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, is scheduled for release in January 2026.
